Costa del Sol - after sunrise

Bildunterschrift hinzufügen30 cm x 40 cm  oil on canvas board

Before I painted I liked and still do like taking pictures - especially those back-lit scenes still catch my attention.
I like the light defining silhouettes.

Costa del Sol - Sunset

18,5 cm x 15 cm  oil on acid free carton board

A painting always finds me. If I find it it is most of the time one made from the head rather one done from the heart.
When I saw the light I had to try and capture the mood rather quickly on a small carton board.
I like it, hope you do, too.

At dusk

30 cm x 40 cm  oil on stretched canvas

Recently I came across this beautiful spot ... without my easel.
Today I went there again with purpose.
Almost a bit too late as the sun was setting faster than I thought. With the last brush stroke done I had to pack up my gear in order not to be totally in the dark, so I only had a look at the finished painting when I got home ... and I like it :)
Hope you do, too

Big City

I don´t know how many times I wanted to paint it. A photo I took years ago from the London Eye was the starting pont for this painting..
Well now it´s done and I like it :-)

Winner Best of juried Show, DPW Art Contest November 2014That is the reason why I marked the painting as sold. I just could not give it away.
But it is time for someone else to enjoy it.

Rising moon

15cm x 18.5cm  Oil on canvas board - en plein air

This is a real quick sketch before sundown. It was getting darker by the minute. When I started to paint the setting sun illuminated the trees only for five minutes or so. As the moon rose above the trees I thought how wonderful. The initial scene changed so much and so quick but I like this sketch very much. Hope you´ll enjoy it as much as I do :-)

Munich - Schwabing

20cm x 20cm  oil on canvas board
Round the corner where I grew up as a child are lovely streets with beautiful architecture.
I don´t know how many times I passed by this balcony even as an adult.
And since I ´m painting wanting to paint it.
 Well I´ve done it now.
What amazes me is, that the balcony is still the same, after all these years, still in its place, still beautiful. Maybe the tenant or the owner has changed.
I´m sure if it was able to talk, it could tell a lot of stories...

Munich, Maximilianstraße

20cm x 20cm oil on canvas board

As much as I wanted to paint cityscapes and now also do, I find them very challenging.
Not so much the colors or the composition but ..., yes ..., drawing.
The perspective, cars, people moving, etc.
I think one of the most important matters to painting in general is drawing.
If values are fine, the composition well chosen, you have variety in your brushstrokes and a lovely color harmony but don´t have a good drawing ...

Especially when painting plein air. One is on location, ready to go.
You´re all excited and just want to put all the colors down on your canvas that you see
and find later, all that you got is a good color-scheme-reference for a future painting.
By the way for those of you who are painting: please don´t scrap those paintings, they are still very valuable, all the light and shadow colors are there, the values,
only if it would have been drawn better.

Well that´s just me ;-)

Thanks Laurel for the challenge.
A felt pen study of an old tree I had made in 2005 was the starting point for this painting.
Probably just waiting for this challenge ;)

Lakeside, early morning - 3 months later

18cm x 24cm  oil on canvas board

It is really amazing how nature puts on a different "dress" every day of the year, every year. One and the same spot never has the same mood. That is what fascinates me when revisiting a scenery for painting. I´ve painted this spot a few times, apart from passing by countles times witout me painting it.

I´ve added to this post an additional paintig as reference, paintd three months ago.
Hopefully you do:)

Another rainy day

12cm x 17cm  watercolor on 275 g/m² paper

A photo I took in Munichs old city by the Opera was the starting point for this watercolor painting. I had planned to do a little quick study with watercolor to see what it could look like as a painting. It was very challenging for me to do as I mainly paint with oils.
Hope you like it. I definately do :)

Walking together

20cm x 20 cm  oil on canvas board
In the summer this two people could, if they wanted to, row a boat at the exact same spot
they´re walking together hand in hand :)
A lovely scene on a frozen lake in the midst of large Munich city park.
The sun´s just setting and ceating this backlit reflections on the forzen surface.
If you follow my paintings you´ll probably know that I like those backlit scenes very much :)

No black paint used in this and all my paintings, but a careful mix of Alizarin Crimson, Phtalogreen and Ultamarine blue. The background has a bit more green in it.

Wannt to check out my palette on my blog?

Early Departure

20cm x20cm  oil on canvas board

I was on my way to the platform just crossing the bridge when I noticed a lady taking a picture of the beautiful sunrise.
I quickly took out my camera and made a photo myself. I wish I had 15 or 20 more minutes to see the loveliness that was evolving minute by minute ...

Later I thought how easily we can miss the beauty that surrounds us ... I was focused on getting to the platform and was not even late!

As I went on my journey the power failed and instead of getting upset - I had planned to watch a nice film -
I took out a good book and decided to enjoy my journey.
And that´s the point, arrival is something to look forward to but so short ... the journey takes a lot longer,
so why not enjoy the time while we´re on the way to where we are going :)

That´s enough words now, let´s get back to painting ;)

Please feel free to comment.
Thank you.

Sundown at the forest´s edge - larger work

24cm x 30cm  oil on MDF canvas board

This is a larger work from a photo of a study that I´ve painted some years ago.
It is not a copy.
I think each painting has its own feel or quality and as such I regard a study or a photo as a starting point for a painting just as nature is a starting point ...

Think of it as "reading" a musical composition from a sheet.
I believe an interpretation takes place which we can hear and enjoy ... and even though the print is the same the interprtation will never sound the same.

Going out with the dog - grey day

15cm x 15cm  Oil on canvas board

I find it very interesting and challenging to paint the same scene in different seasons.
And even more interesting to paint the same spot in the same time of year but at a different time of day or when weather conditions are different.

This artwork was done from a study I did about three years ago.
I remember well the day I painted the study. It was very cold and windy and I wanted to try out my self-made thumb box in this weather
so I really painted very fast with my box in one hand and my brush in the other.
I was excited when a man with his dog passed me by. I quickly sketched their silhouettes and went home to have a hot cup of coffee.

Another one for "Michael´s painting diary" - series.

Munich - Siegestor and Leopoldstraße

18,5cm x 15cm  oil on Michaels canvas board

Looking through my archive I came accross a plein air painting done a few years ago.
I then used to sign "Sasson".
The painting depicts a portion of the "Siegestor" looking to the north and into "Leopoldstraße" in Munich.

Tubes of paint

15cm x 20cm  Oil on oil-primed board

Talking about tools of the trade, here´s one I painted a few years ago.
I still remember the day. It was raining and not the kind of weather one would like to go out and paint.
And as I looked in front of me there it was, ... my still life already set up.
